Improved global wetland carbon isotopic signatures support post-2006 microbial methane emission increase

چکیده

Abstract Atmospheric concentrations of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, have strongly increased since 2007. Measurements stable carbon isotopes methane can constrain emissions if the isotopic compositions are known; however, from wetlands poorly constrained despite their importance. Here, we use process-based biogeochemistry model to calculate composition global wetland emissions. We estimate mean signature ?61.3 ± 0.7‰ and find that tropical enriched by ~11‰ relative boreal wetlands. Our shows improved resolution regional, latitudinal variations in simulation scenarios with suggest increases atmospheric 2007 attributable rising microbial findings substantially reduce uncertainty improve understanding budget.

Global soil carbon projections are improved by modelling microbial processes

Society relies on Earth system models (ESMs) to project future climate and carbon cycle feedbacks. However, the soil C response to climate change is highly uncertain in these models1,2 and they omit key biogeochemical mechanisms3–5. Specifically, the traditional approach in ESMs lacks direct microbial control over soil C dynamics6–8. Thus, we tested a new model that explicitly represents microb...

Sensitivity analysis of a wetland methane emission model based on temperate and arctic wetland sites

Modelling of wetland CH4 fluxes using wetland soil emission models is used to determine the size of this natural source of CH4 emission on local to global scale. Most process models of CH4 formation and soil-atmosphere CH4 transport processes operate on a plot scale. For large scale emission modelling (regional to global scale) upscaling of this type of model requires thorough analysis of the s...

Atmospheric evidence for a global secular increase in carbon isotopic discrimination of land photosynthesis.

A decrease in the 13C/12C ratio of atmospheric CO2 has been documented by direct observations since 1978 and from ice core measurements since the industrial revolution. This decrease, known as the 13C-Suess effect, is driven primarily by the input of fossil fuel-derived CO2 but is also sensitive to land and ocean carbon cycling and uptake. Using updated records, we show that no plausible combin...
